Balearic beat original and – usually – man-about-Milan, Leo Mas, has been locked down 50 KM north, in Lake Lecco. Away from his home, and vast record collection, he has nonetheless throughout 2020 continued to program regular radio shows for both Copenhagen`s Music For Dreams and his local station, Radio Raheem. Leo has also continued to collaborate with long-term studio partner, Fabrice, on a string of dance floor remixes – such as DJ Fede`s Brazilian Trip and Okinawa Delays` I Can`t Sleep
In addition the pair teamed up with fellow “balearic militant / veteran”, A Man Called Adam`s Sally Rodgers, to produce a latter day White Isle anthem in the shapely form of This Unspoken Love (Questo Amore Segreto).
Here Leo lists a few of his more esoteric favourites from last year`s musical releases, and gives us a brief glimpse of his plans for 2021.
Words and selections by Leo Mas.
Could you please give me a few new tunes – releases or reissues – that helped you make it through the last 12 months?
This will be hard to answer, but all being well what plans do you have for 2021?
If the nightmare we all lived in 2020 is towards the end, then there are three projects ready to be released in 2021. The first is a remix of Cantoma`s Into Daylight – the title track from a beautiful album produced by my dear friend Phil Mison, on his label Highwood Recordings. A remix of Expositions` Mystical Energy is also ready to go – this time on my dear friend Andy Pye`s imprint, Balearic Social. Then there’s a project which was finished last May – something that I completed with my dear friend Manu Archeo – a project which I care a lot about. This is the official reissue of Tonica & Dominante`s Gennarino ‘O Sioux and Tigre. The 12” will include the original versions plus our 2 new versions.
In addition to these three releases – which are good to go – I also have more than a dozen remixes and new productions underway and in the pipeline, but for now I wouldn’t like to say when these will be complete and available….having said that one that I am especially looking forward to is a new project with the adorable Sally Rodgers from A Man Called Adam. We`ll be working with two great heroes and pioneers of Italo from the early `80s, Franco Rago and Gigi Farina – the people behind classics like Decadance`s On & On, Lectric Workers` Robot Is Systematic, and Expansives` Life With You.
Is there any way that I, we, others, can help and assist you in achieving these goals? Are you looking for partners for any forthcoming activities – in that sense of “if we stand together we will survive”?
For sure being surrounded by friends you respect, or partners to work with on remixes and new productions is very important. Knowing that you also have their respect and that there is a mutual enthusiasm – a shared stimulus – is essential. I always thank all these people and I consider myself lucky for all this. I hope that my great love for music allows me to live this dream for a while longer and that it continues to make others dream.
