Attempting to recreate the golden yesterdays of Jose Padilla`s White Isle sunsets with the tunes of today.
Wolf Muller & Niklas Wandt – Weltraumsandalen – Growing Bin
Ambient Techno textures surf a gradually rising tide of percussion. Another reason to fork out for a copy of Instrumentalmusik von der Mitte der World.
Cosmic Handshakes – Chophouse – Going Good
A New Orleans healing chant from Detroit, Michigan. Funk straight outta the swamp. A sax howling at the moon.
Poppy Ackroyd – The Calm Before – One Little Indian
Poppy Ackroyd`s new album adds cello, clarinet, flute, hang-drum, harmonium, spinet, to her usual piano and violin. The music still characterised by rhythms that tap away like the heart of a small bird. With the urgency of life itself. Creating thoughtful but playful modern chamber pieces. Anyone into the Penguin Cafe Orchestra should take a listen.
Eblen Macari – Lux Aeterna – Seance Centre
Sunset soundscapes from Mexican composer, Eblen Macari. Music For Planetariums constructed from New Age synths, operatic arias, and Classical guitar. Remastered and reissued by Seance Centre.
K Leimer – As Long Ago As This – Origin Peoples
A collection of new works from K. Leimer for Origin Peoples. His first original vinyl outing in twenty-five years. Compositions that pay homage to names like Cluster, and Neu! Pioneers who inspired Leimer to start making music. Compositions that move like finely tuned clockwork. Each element a cogged wheel, spinning. Its teeth delicately meshing with those of its neighbours.
Turner Street Sound – With The Lot (Sleep D Hydro Version) – Butter Sessions
Sleep D`s super stoned mix of Turner Street Sound. Again taking classic Detroit machine tones. This time dropping them into Dubwise.
MJ Lallo – Aquarius Blue – Seance Centre
From a 3-track 12, that serves as a teaser for a planned double LP. Introducing the world to the mysterious MJ Lallo. Who has been active in the production of music for over forty years, but is practically invisible on Discogs. Her music focusses on the processing of her own “Channelled Voice”. Here creating cool, ethereal Pop.
Kuniyuki Takahashi – Drawing Seeds – Music From Memory
More from the archives. Music From Memory are compiling the early work of Japanese producer, Kuniyuki Takahashi. Something of a legend these days, MFM`s first volume dates from 1986. The piece I`ve chosen sounds like a mechanised take on Seigen Ono`s music for Comme des Garcons.
Virna Lindt – Underwater Boy – Les Disques Du Crépuscule
Tongue-in-cheek, Swinging `60s Cold War spy film-inspired Swedish Pop. Released in the early `80s, Virna`s music and style must have surely been an influence on St. Etienne. The LP, Shiver, was re-issued in December, with some handy bonus instrumentals.
Dr Mary Sullivan Bain – Do You Know Black History (Musical) – Backatcha
Again reissued late last year. A hazy sheen of reflection-inducing electronics that back a lesson in proud Black history. Likened in some quarters to Pat Metheny`s Cafe Del Mar-friendly The Falcon And The Snowman soundtrack.
Mushi & Lakansyel – Kalalou – Granit
Haitian Jazz. Borrowed by GUTS & Mambo for Beach Diggin` Vol. Two. Given a proper reissue by Granit. The people responsible for the rediscovery of Claude Rodap. Championed by Basso and Cedric Woo.
Michel Sardaby – Welcome New Warmth – World Seven
More Jazz. Perhaps a tad too lively for a Jose tape of old. Perhaps. But sublime all the same. A London Jazz Dance classic, once compiled by a fledgling Soul Jazz (they included it on their first comp), now reissued on an off-shoot of Africa Seven.
